This is proof that when we speak up, we can make a difference. Parents, educators, and advocates across Oklahoma and the country — including many of YOU — took a stand, sending a powerful message that every child, regardless of immigration status, should have access to an education.

But our fight isn’t over, friend. We will stay vigilant, monitoring states as they consider similar attacks on the right to education — because every child’s future is worth defending.

Friend, the team at NILC is closely monitoring a dangerous proposal in Oklahoma that threatens the wellbeing of children across the state. Here’s what we know:

The Oklahoma State Board of Education just approved a proposal that requires parents to provide citizenship information when they enroll their children in school. This is a blatant attempt to undermine access to education for Oklahomans and instill fear in our communities.

The 1982 Supreme Court ruling in Plyler v. Doe made it clear: States cannot deny students access to public K-12 education based on their immigration status. This proposal would substantially threaten that right and would violate the Constitution. It’s a cynical and cruel attempt to frighten parents away from providing their children with an education — the fundamental building block for their futures.
