Dear Reader,
Commonly held ideas about what it means to be human are being dismantled. What exactly will replace them is somewhat unclear, but most proposals on offer are not reassuring.
This is not news to anyone who has thumbed through an issue of FIRST THINGS or scanned the pages of Carl R. Trueman’s acclaimed book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self.
But what can be done about it? Is the solution political? cultural? religious? all of the above?
We’ve tasked Trueman with supplying a substantive, compelling answer to this set of questions—a weighty assignment. But as readers of FIRST THINGS and his books will also know, he is more than up to the challenge.
I hope you’ll join me, Trueman, and hundreds of your fellow readers for the eighth annual FIRST THINGS Lecture in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, March 11.
Tickets to the lecture are free of charge with a suggested donation of $25. Lecture sponsorships are also available starting at $1,000.
