Summer is here! This year, of course, won’t be the same. We will all be missing many of our favorite festivals and concerts, but there is still much to look forward to. It is time to get outdoors and enjoy the season, albeit while maintaining social distancing and following your local guidelines. The National Park Service is increasing access and services in a phased approach across all of its parks, but you should check individual park websites to determine operating status.

Meanwhile, in Washington, much of the regular legislation agenda is expected to resume as Congress continues to look for ways to deal with the health and economic crises, and we’ve been busy advocating for several policies consistent with our values. Read more below:

Next Week: The Great American Outdoors Act—ConservAmerica Webinar Series

 On Tuesday, June 2, at 12 PM EDT, ConservAmerica’s Webinar Series will continue with a discussion of the Great American Outdoors Act. Featured panelists will include Collin O’Mara, President of the National Wildlife Foundation, Brian Yablonski, CEO of PERC, Christy Plumer, Chief Conservation Officer of the TRCP, and our own General Counsel, Brent Fewell. The bill’s co-sponsors, Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Joe Manchin (R-WV), have also been invited to participate. Sen. Manchin has already confirmed. Op-Ed: Civilian Conservation Corps Model Could Help America Recover

 Congress has so far approved three relief packages to address the pandemic, but ConservAmerica’s Alexandra Ogilvie says policymakers should go further and revive public service programs such as those popular during the Great Depression. She advocates for the revival of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which she says would provide relief and hope as well as give much-needed attention to our national parks. Op-Ed: No Better Time to Modernize America's Energy Infrastructure

 ConservAmerica President Jeff Kupfer co-authored an op-ed in The Hill with Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions Executive Director Heather Reams discussing clean energy jobs losses due to COVID-19. They wrote that that legislation including America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act and the American Energy Innovation Act could help spur economic recovery and rebuild the sector’s workforce. Policy Report: Targeted NEPA Reform Supports Efforts to Reopen America’s Economy

ConservAmerica recently released a policy report on the need to update the NEPA process to ensure that economic growth and environmental protection continue to be equally valued. It is based on written comments by NYU Law professor and Hoover Institute Senior Fellow Richard Epstein on the White House Council on Environmental Quality’s (CEQ) proposed revisions to the NEPA process that ConservAmerica submitted in March.  Read the full policy report here.

 

ConservAmerica Signs Letter to Energy & Commerce and Energy & Natural Resources Committees on Competitive Electricity Markets

Given the foundational role that electricity plays in unlocking virtually all economic activity in the United States, ConservAmerica joined a diverse group in signing a letter to ask Congress to expand and improve competitive wholesale electricity markets in order to lower costs for consumers, increase access to clean energy & boost our economy. Gardner Secures Senate Action on the Great American Outdoors Act

Just prior to the Memorial Day recess, Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) worked out a deal to ensure that his landmark conservation legislation, the Great American Outdoors Act, will receive a floor vote in June. The bill, which would fully and permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and address the deferred maintenance backlog on public lands, is expected to gain bipartisan support. American Critical Mineral Exploration and Innovation Act Introduced

House Committee on Natural Resources Ranking Republican Rob Bishop (R-UT), House Committee on Space, Science, and Technology Ranking Republican Frank Lucas (R-OK), and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) joined bill leads U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL) and U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) in introducing legislation aimed to reduce America’s dependence on foreign sources of critical minerals by supporting responsible domestic mineral development. Trump Administration Approves Largest Solar Farm in U.S.

U.S. Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt signed the Record of Decision (ROD) for Solar Partners XI, LLC to construct a 690-MW photovoltaic solar electric generating facility and ancillary facilities about 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas. When finished, it is expected to generate enough electricity to power 260,000 homes in the Las Vegas area and potential energy markets in Southern California.
