One size doesn't fit all - Elephant image

The world’s largest land mammal majestically roams the African savanna, while a relatively unknown little mouse burrows into the Southern California coast. Although elephants weigh almost 600,000 times as much as Pacific pocket mice, these two have something huge in common: both species are crucial to the health of their delicately balanced ecosystems.

In conservation, there isn’t a “one size fits all” approach to saving and protecting wildlife. For sustainable success, each species’ unique needs are taken into consideration, including their native landscapes, behaviors, and more. Working with partners and local communities, we’re finding innovative solutions for endangered elephants, Pacific pocket mice, and wildlife of all shapes and sizes.

Big conservation successes begin with small moments. Together we can create colossal change for wildlife, people, and the planet we all share. With the support of allies like you, we’re making a difference for wildlife through our eight Conservation Hubs, from the savanna to the Southwest and across the globe. Thank you for being with us every step of the way.

Two Rhinos

A RHINO ALLIANCE

Black rhinos living at Loisaba Conservancy in Kenya may never meet white rhinos living at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Yet they’re each helping conserve their species, both of which are threatened. Groundbreaking new technology allows us to identify rhinos in the landscapes they live in, helping us understand their movements and informing conservation solutions—which have the potential to help wildlife worldwide, too.

Two Koalas

APPLYING OUR KOALA-FICATIONS

Koalas face an uncertain future due to threats including climate change and disease. After the devastating mega-fires of 2019 and 2020, you helped us find a path forward to save this marsupial. To guide conservation efforts for these iconic but endangered tree-dwellers, we’re also collaborating to create the largest genomic database and mapping populations. Climb on in to discover the other innovative ways you’re helping protect koalas for generations to come.

SO SMALL IT’S MICROSCOPIC

DNA is a window into physiology, behavior, and evolution. By sequencing and analyzing wildlife genomes, we can help ensure species have what they need to survive and thrive. It all starts with priceless samples preserved in our Tissue and DNA Bank—one of the six subcollections of our Wildlife Biodiversity Bank. This year, we’re honoring the past and looking ahead to the future as we celebrate 50 years of conservation science.
