John,
The Trump administration’s assault on government oversight and the separation of powers isn’t slowing down. Regulatory agencies that Congress made independent – meant to be free from political influence – are now taking the hit.
The other week, we saw the illegal attempt to fire FEC Commissioner Ellen Weintraub. This week, the Trump administration has set its sights on other independent agencies, including ones that protect consumers, regulate media companies, and more.
Yesterday, President Trump issued an unprecedented executive order giving himself more power to commandeer these independent agencies. [1] Congress made them independent, now Trump wants to bring them under his control.
Enough is enough – no president has the legal power to order independent agencies to do their bidding. These attempts at ripping constitutional powers from the hands of Congress must stop. Congress: Stand up to these abuses of power.
Trump has claimed the right to unilaterally block funding if an agency’s efforts conflict with “presidential priorities.” He has diminished the power of your congressional representation and your vote.
Congress established the FEC and other agencies to be free from presidential control and political pressures – to act in the best interests of the American people.
Congress needs to do the same and stop the overreach and defend the powers granted to them in the Constitution. Add your name to tell Congress to stop the takeover of their constitutional powers.
Thanks for standing with us,
The Issue One Team
