John,
The idea of a U.S. war in Mexico is as reckless as it is dangerous -- no reasonable person wants this. Yet, troubling signs suggest that Trump and his allies could escalate the failed war on drugs into something far worse: military action inside Mexico.
Elon Musk, who holds disturbing influence over this administration, gleefully clarified the logical consequences of the administration designating cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs): “That means they’re eligible for drone strikes.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s senior counterterrorism advisor, Seb Gorka, is openly advocating for unilateral military operations in Mexico -- without the consent of the Mexican government or authorization from Congress.
This is how dangerous rhetoric turns into deadly policy.
Military intervention will not stop the flow of drugs or help families suffering from the fentanyl crisis. Instead, it will increase violent deaths and displacement in Mexico, endanger U.S. service members, destabilize an entire region, and severely damage our relationship with one of our closest allies and largest trading partners.
Thankfully, Representative Joaquin Castro has introduced a resolution to oppose these reckless proposals by affirming Mexico’s sovereignty and making it clear that military intervention is not the answer. Congress must pass it decisively to shut down any path toward war before it gains traction.
Send a direct message to your representative, urging them to co-sponsor and support Rep. Castro’s Resolution Opposing U.S. Military Action Against Mexico.
A U.S. strike in Mexico would be catastrophic. It would escalate violence, spread instability, endanger lives in both countries, and fail to address the root causes of the opioid crisis. This resolution is a crucial step in pushing back against dangerous rhetoric and reaffirming that war is not an option.
Trump loves chaos and crisis -- as he said recently about his disgraceful meeting with Ukrainian President Zelinsky, it makes “good television.” But good television does not make good policy, and the wartime suffering of others is not WWE entertainment.
We must make it clear to Trump, Congress, and the world: The American people do not support a war in Mexico. We need your help to mobilize to ensure this resolution passes.
Now is the time to take a stand and tell your member of Congress to co-sponsor and pass this resolution. Urge your representative to oppose reckless military action in Mexico now.
Thank you for reaffirming that diplomacy -- not war -- is the only path forward.
