In August 2022, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) passed a rule outlawing untraceable ghost guns and requiring unassembled gun kits to be serialized and purchasers to pass a background check.1 Now under a new administration, this federal rule could go away, and in Pennsylvania, we don’t have a failsafe.
Last year, we advocated for a statewide ghost gun ban in Pennsylvania. It passed in the PA House, but opponents claimed it was unnecessary because of the federal ban. Now that the federal ban is under threat it’s time we bust this myth.
The use of ghost guns in crimes, including homicide, increased by 1,000% between 2017 and 2023.2 Thanks to the ATF rule, 2024 was the first year to see a decrease in ghost gun crimes.3Now that could all go away, sending us spiraling into danger.
