John,
Today is International Women’s Day. We’re feeling gratitude for the incredible women leading in this difficult moment, and also grief for the millions of women who have been systematically targeted and harmed by MAGA’s cruel agenda.
We’re coming up on three years without the federal protections of Roe, and the standard of healthcare for all women, pregnant patients as well as women seeking everyday care, has been devastated by abortion bans:
-
The Dobbs decision created a new shortage of OBGYNs, with restrictions affecting both the number of applications to OBGYN programs and the growing number of doctors leaving states with bans.
- More than a third of US counties are maternity care deserts, where there is not a single medical center or doctor specializing in maternal care.
- In Texas, pregnant patients who experience complications face surging sepsis rates because doctors are delaying miscarriage care under threat of criminal penalty.
- An increase in bills using fetal personhood language has put the future of IVF at risk.
- Many community clinics that provide cancer screenings, routine check ups, and menopause treatments have been forced to close, with others under threat.
In addition, Trump spent his first weeks in office attacking and denigrating trans people, creating even more barriers to healthcare access for trans women.
It’s a dismal background against which to celebrate International Women’s Day, but our vision for reproductive freedom has never been more clear.
Everyone should be able to choose if, when, and with whom to raise a safe and thriving family without interference from politicians. Everyone deserves access to comprehensive healthcare, no matter their zip code. And everyone has the fundamental right of autonomy over their own body, free from government control.
Our pro-choice candidates fight for this vision at the state and local level every day. The future of reproductive freedom will be won and lost in statehouses and court rooms across the country, and these leaders deserve our support.
If you’re able, please consider giving to this critical work with a gift in honor of International Women’s Day.
Thank you,
Sara Tabatabaie
