Today and everyday, we celebrate the achievements of women here in the U.S. and across the world. Their contributions have made the world a better and fairer place for us all.
While women across the globe have made important advancements for the rights of women and girls, significant barriers to gender equality remain.
One of the largest barriers is pay inequality.
As of now, the global gender pay gap stands at 68.5%. In the U.S., the gap has been persistent and has had enormous ramifications for women’s financial well-being and quality of life.
On average, American women earn 83 cents for every dollar a man makes. These figures are even worse for women of color. Black and Latina women on average earn 64 cents and 57 cents respectively.
Closing the gender wage gap would have immediate economic benefits for women, their families, and the country as a whole.
Several states have taken action to reduce the wage gap, but we know more is needed.
At the federal level, the Paycheck Fairness Act — first introduced in 1997 would end existing loopholes in pay discrimination laws. Unsurprisingly, Republicans in the Senate have blocked the legislation.
John, this issue should have bipartisan support. And a majority of Americans agree across party lines that women should be compensated at the same rate as men for the same amount of work.
Our elected leaders should take a hint and finally pass the Paycheck Fairness Act — and we’re building the consensus to make this a reality. Can you sign on to our petition today demanding Congress act to end the gender wage gap once and for all?
