Today is International Women’s Day — an opportunity to honor the accomplishments of generations of courageous women who have fought for gender equality.
It’s also a sobering reminder of the setbacks we’ve faced. The fundamental freedoms that have been ripped away. The long distance we still have to go.
And today, it’s important to recognize that we’re up against a new potential threat.
Extremists in the U.S. House of Representatives are racing to pass a voter suppression bill called the SAVE Act that could disenfranchise millions of Americans — disproportionately hurting young people, low-income people, communities of color, rural residents, and women.
Under this proposed law, every time someone registers to vote or updates their registration, they’d have to prove their citizenship by showing documents like passports or birth certificates.
Millions of Americans simply don’t have or can’t easily access those documents.
And as many as 69 million women in America wouldn’t be able to use their birth certificates to verify their citizenship and register to vote. That’s because they changed their names when they got married and don’t have those new names on their birth certificates.
The bill would also lead to problematic voter purges, functionally end mail-in and online voter registration as well as third-party registration drives, and upend automatic voter registration.
At Fair Fight Action, we’re exposing the damage that legislation like the SAVE Act would do to our democracy, and we’ll keep working to ensure all voters can make their voices heard in our democracy.
But we’re counting on grassroots support to fight back against voter suppression. Will you make a donation of $25 or any amount today?

Let’s be clear: the SAVE Act is completely unnecessary. It’s already against the law for people who aren’t citizens to vote, and false claims about noncitizen voting have been widely debunked.
This bill is also actively harmful. It could fan the flames of noncitizen-voting conspiracy theories — setting up future attempts to challenge (read: overturn) the results of free and fair elections. And it could restrict access to the ballot box for communities that already face too many barriers.
But anti-voter extremists are trying to ram it through Congress as part of their anti-democracy agenda.
And you know who’s a big fan? Elon Musk. Here’s something he tweeted last year about the SAVE Act: “Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS. What is the penalty for traitors again?”
Actually, there’s nothing more patriotic than standing up for fundamental American values like equal participation in our democracy.
And we will keep pushing back against a wave of new anti-voter legislation — analyzing and exposing the bills’ impacts, lobbying alongside allies, building public pressure, and ensuring voters have accurate information about their rights and registration requirements.
Please chip in right now to help protect the freedom to vote, and help defend our democracy from attempts to make access to the ballot box even more unequal.
Thank you,
The Fair Fight Action Team
