At Corn and Soybean Farm, Governor Walz Highlights Impact of Tariffs on Minnesota Farmers

Governor Walz speaks to press at a corn and soybean farm in Cannon Falls

On Tuesday, Governor Walz visited a corn and soybean farm in Cannon Falls to highlight the impact of President Trump’s tariffs on Minnesota farmers. Tariffs on Canada and Mexico took effect on Tuesday, limiting markets for Minnesota agricultural products while raising prices on fertilizer and fuel used to grow crops in the state. Both Canada and Mexico are among the top three countries for Minnesota’s agricultural exports.

*“In the last month, President Trump has made it abundantly clear that he does not care about the farmers who feed, fuel, and grow our country. The tariffs that took effect today will hurt our farmers, point blank,”* said Governor Walz. *“As Governor, I will work to ensure Minnesota continues to be a valued trading partner, and we will continue to stand up and fight for the people who feed our families and drive our economy.”*

*“President Trump’s tariffs pose a serious threat to the future of trade with Canada. But while the President may not value the partnerships that contribute billions of dollars to our economy, Minnesota does,”* said Governor Walz. *“I am working closely with Canadian leadership to help Minnesota get through this unnecessary and costly trade war.”*

Governor Walz Announces Effort to Help Federal Workers Laid off by Donald Trump Find Jobs in Minnesota

________________________________________________________________________

On Thursday, Governor Walz announced a new resource for federal employees who have recently lost their jobs or are facing employment uncertainty. Minnesota’s tight labor market continues to be a challenge for businesses looking to hire in Minnesota, with less than one person unemployed for every job opening available. The initiative comes as the Trump administration, led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), seeks to lay off tens of thousands of dedicated public servants.

*“In Minnesota, we value the experience and expertise of federal workers, even if Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and DOGE do not,”* said Governor Walz. *“Government workers provide services each of us relies on – from park rangers to firefighters to medical personnel who care for our veterans. If the Trump administration turned you away, Minnesota wants you.”*
