Good morning, John
Last Saturday, we gathered in Fermanagh for our Spring Policy Conference - a day filled with energy, ideas, solutions, and determination. It was a powerful reminder of why we are involved in politics – because we are committed to making Northern Ireland work for everyone.
Why does this matter? Because Northern Ireland’s future depends on the success of its public services, economy, and governance. We want to transform how public services are delivered - ensuring better healthcare, stronger education, and safer communities. Patients should not face unbearable waiting lists, children should have access to world-class education regardless of their background, and our streets should be places of safety and prosperity.
These are not just policy goals; they are the foundation upon which we can make the case for the constitutional status quo. When Northern Ireland works well for all its people, the argument for remaining part of the United Kingdom is not just political - it is practical, beneficial, and undeniable.
We also live in an increasingly unstable world. Conflicts in Europe, tensions across the globe, and economic uncertainties reinforce the advantages of being part of the United Kingdom.
Compared to the Republic of Ireland, which has no substantial defence forces and clings to a policy of neutrality, our place in the UK ensures real security. The UK has a military that stands firm in defence of democracy, a voice on the global stage that carries weight as we have seen this week, and an economic foundation as the fifth largest economy in the world that provides stability. The Republic’s neutrality indicates a selfish willingness to rely on others to make sacrifices for the very values it claims to uphold - offering words of support but leaving the responsibility of action to others. In contrast, the United Kingdom takes responsibility, acts decisively, and provides security for its people and those faced with despots and dictators across the globe. Ours is a Union of values worth defending.
Our commitment to Northern Ireland goes beyond party politics. We will continue to work closely with our fellow unionists to make a strong and positive case for the Union. But we also recognise the importance of reaching out - to those who do not identify as unionists or nationalists, and to those whose aspiration is for a United Ireland. Northern Ireland must work for everyone, regardless of political identity. We must ensure that every child growing up here - no matter their community - sees a future filled with opportunity, prosperity, and stability. That their identity is part of the fabric of our society and respected as such.
That is our mission, and I want to thank my colleagues at Westminster and at Stormont for their unanimous support once more to lead us as we chart the course ahead. I am delighted that beside me I will have our new Deputy Leader, Michelle McIlveen MLA.
Michelle’s unwavering dedication, extensive experience, and steadfast commitment to our party’s values make her an invaluable asset. Her focus on grassroots engagement is truly commendable, as she understands that our strength lies in our close relationship with our communities, members and supporters across Northern Ireland. By fostering these connections, Michelle is instrumental in building a robust foundation for our party’s success in the 2027 elections.
Together, we will work tirelessly to ensure that the Democratic Unionist Party continues to represent and serve the people effectively, championing the pro-Union cause and delivering on our commitments for a better Northern Ireland.
Enjoy your weekend,
Gavin Robinson MP
DUP Leader
