“Texas A&M Board of Regents vote Glenn Hegar as sole finalist for chancellor,” Bryan Eagle's Stephen Whitaker — “The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents voted unanimously on Friday to name Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar as the 15th chancellor in system history.
Hegar, a 1993 A&M graduate, was chosen over the other four finalists: Texas State Rep. Trent Ashby, R-Lufkin; Texas A&M Foundation President Tyson Voelkel; University of Alabama President Stuart Bell; and U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin. All, except McCaul, were A&M grads.
“The Board is confident that Glenn Hegar is ready to usher in the next era of excellence at The Texas A&M University System,” Board of Regents Chairman Bill Mahomes said in a statement. Mahomes declined further comment to media members at the meeting. “Hegar grasps the unique breadth and depth of the System’s impact on every corner of Texas through its eight state agencies and 11 universities. We, as members of the Board of Regents, are eager to see what he will accomplish.”
Texas state law requires a 21-day waiting period before the appointment can be made official. Once it becomes official, Hegar would begin as chancellor on July 1.
“The opportunity to serve as the next chancellor of the Texas A&M University System is a tremendous honor,” Hegar said in a statement. “I want to thank each of the regents for their confidence, yet more importantly for their energy, passion, dedication, and constant commitment to excellence.”
The process that led to Hegar being chosen as the next chancellor began last July when current Chancellor John Sharp announced he would retire on June 30, 2025.
Sharp voiced his support for Hegar in a statement released Friday afternoon.
"Glenn will make an outstanding chancellor for the Texas A&M system," Sharp said. "He and Dara are devout Aggies and I am here to help in any way I can. I wish Glenn and his family the very best."
Since taking over as chancellor in September 2011, Sharp has overseen several improvements to the system including the acquisition of a law school in Fort Worth and the creation of the RELLIS campus in Bryan. Sharp also worked to add the Texas Division of Emergency Management as the eighth state agency led by the A&M system. Sharp is the longest-tenured chancellor in system history.
“I want to thank Chancellor Sharp for his 14 years of strong leadership, as his steady hand has guided the Texas A&M University System to heights that no one thought possible,” Hegar said in a statement on X.
A national search was conducted by Russell Reynolds and Associates out of Houston. The five finalists were named in February and interviewed with the regents Feb. 24 at Russell Reynolds headquarters in downtown Houston.
“The Board members were pleased to see its search for chancellor yield so much interest and so many qualified candidates,” Mahomes said in a statement. “We thank everyone who was involved in this extensive search and selection process.”
Hegar has served as comptroller since 2014. The comptroller is the state’s chief tax collector, accountant, revenue estimator, treasurer and purchasing manager. The comptroller’s office is responsible for writing the checks and keeping the books for the state government. The comptroller’s office also handles the state’s cash and the state’s Treasury Safekeeping Trust.
Before he was comptroller, Hegar served in the Texas Senate from 2006-14 and the Texas House from 2002-06. The Hockley native is a sixth-generation Texan.
Hegar graduated from A&M with a degree in political science and history. He has a master of arts and law degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and a master of laws degree from the University of Arkansas. ..
Gov. Greg Abbott will be tasked with choosing a replacement comptroller to finish out the current term before the next general election in November 2026." Bryan Eagle [ [link removed] ] ($)
