Hi John,
As the Executive Director of Emerge New Mexico, it was my pleasure to speak at the Modernization Day of Action at the Capitol in New Mexico earlier this month. Our efforts are dedicated to building a state government that looks like the people it represents, and we’re so proud of the role we played in electing the largest female legislative majority in US history last November.
In addition to our work to recruit and train Democratic women and nonbinary individuals to run for office, Emerge is urging for change at the Legislature. One of the most important policies that is being considered would ask our state’s voters to establish a salary for New Mexico legislators — who are currently the only unpaid state lawmakers in our nation.
Would you take on a demanding part-time job that didn’t pay you anything? In New Mexico and beyond, the impacts are clear: many folks who would consider running for public office just can’t commit time away from their families and careers for a job that doesn’t pay. Even a modest salary for members of the New Mexico House and Senate would go a long way towards building a more representative state government.
In other news, we’re proud of the 37 Emerge alums who are currently serving as state lawmakers. These leaders truly exemplify the values we stand for at Emerge, and are helping to build a brighter future for New Mexico. In an uncertain political era, we are fortunate to have these women fighting for change at the state level.
I’m excited to share more updates with you soon — be well!
Thanks,
Estela Hernandez
