By Kat Ramkumar | Less than a month into Trump’s second term, tens of thousands across the country have taken to the streets to protest his administration’s anti-democratic policies. From major cities to small towns, demonstrators are rallying against mass layoffs in government watchdog agencies, the implementation of Project 2025, and pardons for Jan. 6 participants. By Amani Echols | President Trump’s executive order banning decades of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices erodes the federal government’s ability to hold hospitals accountable for their treatment of Black women and role in improving Black maternal health. This is especially troubling as it comes a few weeks after the Biden Administration reached a historic settlement agreement between the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights (HHS OCR) and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Cedars-Sinai) in the Kira Johnson case.
In 2016, Kira Johnson tragically lost her life after giving birth to her second child through a routine C-section at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. Despite concerns voiced by Kira and her family about her condition, Kira was allowed to bleed internally for more than 10 hours before the medical staff took action.

February 2025 Reads for the Rest of Us [[link removed]]

By Karla J. Strand | Each month, I provide Ms. readers with a list of new books being published by writers from historically excluded groups.
I take comfort, inspiration and ideas from books. From the 20 here, I’ve learned about Sámi boarding schools, Mexican feminisms and new strategies for having courageous conversations. I’m even more convinced of the urgent need for educational and political reform. I’ve read stories of exclusion and violence, as well as hope and triumph. I’ve seen truth decimate fear, light scare away the dark, comfort prevail over capitalistic greed. That’s what books do: They comfort us, educate us, enrage us and inspire us. Whatever books you read this month, I hope you find what you’re looking for.
