WILL Wins Big to Keep MPS Students Safe!

Judge Orders MPS to Comply with the Law

A Milwaukee judge has granted a writ of mandamus from WILL and ordered School Resource Officers (SROs) be placed in Milwaukee schools by February 27th. Per the judge, MPS is to pay 50% of the cost of the SROs, splitting costs with the city of Milwaukee.

WILL filed a lawsuit late last year on behalf of a Milwaukee mom.  We interviewed her about why she took on Wisconsin's largest school district. You can watch that video here.

WILL Associate Counsel, Lauren Greuel, stated, “It should have never come to this, and we are pleased to see the judge act so definitively to move us closer to a resolution. Now is the time for MPS to end the excuses and delays and follow the law by taking basic steps to protect kids going to school.”

WILL Slams SCOWIS Decision on Voter Van Case

WILL issued a statement in response to a decision from the Supreme Court of Wisconsin (SCOWIS) dismissing our lawsuit on behalf of a Racine voter, due to standing.

WILL Deputy Counsel, Lucas Vebber, stated, “This is a sad day. Today’s decision closes the courthouse doors to Wisconsinites who seek to hold government officials accountable for their illegal conduct. In this case, a circuit court judge determined the election officials in Racine acted unlawfully in their conduct of an election. Today’s decision does not address those issues, rather it silences Wisconsinites who seek to challenge such unlawful action.”

Once again, the nation continues to watch how legal fights in Wisconsin are playing out. Read more in The Federalist.

New Column: National test scores show danger of education fads and dumbing down standards

In Wisconsin's largest city, the state's approach to education is failing. Here's the latest from WILL Fellow Shannon Whitworth:

"By lowering the bar, we mask just how bad the problem is. Look no further than our largest city. State officials identify 9.8% of black students as meeting expectations in math. But according to the NAEP “report card” just 2% of Black students are proficient at the eight grade level. Milwaukee also saw one of the largest decreases in 4th grade reading scores in NAEP's new data."

Legislature Moves Key Education Bill Forward

The Wisconsin State Assembly voted to pass AB1, legislation WILL believes will go a long way in addressing the lack of education standards and accountability we see coming from DPI.

WILL Policy Director Kyle Koenen issued the following statement after the vote, “DPI’s actions in recent years have lowered the bar and moved Wisconsin away from widely respected national standards. Parents and students deserve honest data – not watered down metrics designed to hide mediocrity. Assembly Bill 1 puts Wisconsin back on track, ensuring we hold students to the highest standards so they can succeed into the future.”
