John,

If the Trump administration were as dedicated to fighting the coronavirus as they are to destroying Social Security and Medicare, we might not have 40 million newly unemployed and more than 100,000 deaths.

Instead, the Trump administration has chosen to let Americans―especially older Americans―die, while he exploits that crisis to destroy cherished American institutions from the Postal Service to our Social Security system.

Americans need help. Rent is due tomorrow, and the $1200 folks received months ago is long gone. Instead of $2000/month for everyone until the crisis has passed, Trump has proposed eliminating Social Security and Medicare’s dedicated funding, and other members of the Trump administration are pushing a scheme to reduce future Social Security benefits in exchange for cash now.

Social Security Works has been fighting back all month, rallying support to protect seniors from the Trump administration. We are going to keep fighting in June, and for as long as it takes. Chip in $7 today!

Trump and his Republican allies are now refusing to offer federal assistance to states and cities, which is leading to a wave of layoffs among people who perform vital services. Teachers, firefighters, and more are going to be out of a job.

Desperate for any tax revenue, states and cities are making decisions about re-opening based on financial constraints instead of public health. This is forcing workers to choose between putting food on the table and risking their lives in unsafe pandemic working conditions.

This is another phase of the war on seniors. By loosening restrictions and increasing potential exposure, seniors will be further driven into a second-class citizenship.

We have been saying from the beginning: The only way to recover from a pandemic-fueled recession is to beat the pandemic. That means PPE, testing, tracing, and isolating. We’re going to keep saying it until Congress listens!

The Trump administration thinks solidarity is too hard. That’s why they’re spending all of their time trying to divide us. But we are all in it together. That’s the point of Social Security. And that’s why Republicans want to destroy it.

Thanks for fighting with us.
