House Republicans recently cleared a critical hurdle to deliver on President Trump’s America First agenda.
Last week, my House Republican Budget Committee colleagues and I passed a budget resolution out of Committee. This victory marks the first step in unlocking the budget reconciliation process, which provides a fast-track, filibuster-proof avenue to achieve many of President Trump’s key priorities. Keep in mind, reconciliation cannot be used as a vehicle for just any policy; it must be policies that directly impact mandatory spending, revenues, or the debt limit.
Our budget resolution provides a blueprint to deliver President Trump’s tax cuts, rein in Washington’s spending, and invest in America’s national and border security.
Admittedly, this wasn’t an easy process.
For starters, our marathon markup of the budget resolution lasted more than twelve hours due to debating over thirty Democrat amendments. Many of these efforts were simply attempts to fearmonger and mislead the American people, largely pushing lies surrounding Social Security and Medicare. In reality, House Republicans’ budget resolution does not impact legitimate, critical benefits. Our focus is on rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse — such as the billions of dollars in annual improper Medicaid payments.
Democrats also proposed amendments that would unnecessarily burden you and your family. For example, I vehemently opposed a Democrat-led amendment aiming to boost the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) budget by $20 billion for the sole purpose of rehiring President Biden’s army of 87,000 IRS agents to target middle-class Americans.
