What is World No Tobacco Day? It's a day to focus attention on the global health crisis caused by tobacco use, the world's number one cause of preventable death. It was started in 1987 by the World Health Organization. And it happens every year on May 31st. What makes #WNTD2020 important? In the midst of COVID-19, a lung-disease pandemic, the tobacco industry is targeting young people with slick marketing campaigns to sell lung-harming, highly-addictive products. In addition to kid-friendly products like menthol cigarettes they've peddled for decades, the industry is now pushing a barrage of new products aimed at youth – like e-cigarettes that come in thousands of flavors, from cotton candy to bubble gum. That's why the World Health Organization has set the theme of this year's World No Tobacco Day as #TobaccoExposed: to shine a bright light on how this predatory industry continues to target and addict kids. With health experts warning that smoking and vaping can worsen COVID-19, there’s never been a more critical time to stop the industry’s harmful practices. Across the world today, organizations like us and advocates like you are speaking out, raising awareness, and demanding action. It's easy to participate: Simply share this video on social media using #WNTD2020 and #TobaccoExposed, and forward this message to friends and family. Will you raise your voice? Sincerely, |
