Team—

In an expected but nonetheless disgraceful decision, the Trump administration reinstated the Global Gag Rule late last month. This policy will deny individuals across the world access to essential sexual and reproductive health services and information.

Here's what you need to know—and what comes next for repro rights advocates.

What is the Global Gag Rule?

A policy originally introduced by the Reagan administration in 1984 that restricts U.S. funding assistance or grants to non-U.S. nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) providing, counseling, or advocating for legal abortion services.

Who does the Global Gag Rule affect?

Any organization that receives grants or assistance from the U.S. government is put in the difficult position of losing vital funds or accepting the funds but severely restricting their ability to provide and counsel on abortion care.

How is the Center for Reproductive Rights fighting back?

To help affected NGOs navigate this policy and retain as much funding as possible, the Center has created a Global Gag Rule Pro Bono Clearinghouse, connecting NGOs with expert global law firms that can provide pro bono counsel.

What can I do? Where can I learn more?

Next, we stay united, informed, and prepared. Join us for a special webinar on Thursday, March 5th, where a Center legal expert will break down the Global Gag Rule prohibitions and what comes next.

TL;DR, the Global Gag Rule is a cruel and disastrous policy that undermines the health and human rights of women and girls across the globe. And, just as in his first term, President Trump is expected to enact a similar "domestic gag rule" in the future.

Sadly, this is just the beginning. Stick with the Center and we'll ensure you have the information you need to know what’s coming next—and how to fight back.

Onward,

Center for Reproductive Rights

P.S. Don't forget to register for our webinar here! It will be an important discussion, touching on all the implications in the global fight for reproductive rights.
