Lowering Costs for American Families
Over the past four years, excessive spending in Washington has driven up inflation by more than 20%, Wisconsin families are spending $10,000 more a year for the same goods and services as they were at the start of 2021.
One of the areas that has seen the largest cost increases for Wisconsin families is energy prices. The average Wisconsin household is paying $76 more per month on energy compared to just four years ago. That's nearly $4,700 more total in energy costs over the past four years. In Congress, I am working to unleash American energy and encourage domestic energy production to lower the costs for Wisconsin families.
Excessive federal regulations have added costs on goods and services in a variety of industries. These regulations have real impacts on family budgets, with some reports calculating that federal regulations add $2.1 trillion in new costs, more than $15,000 per household. I remain focused on eliminating the bureaucratic red tape that has increased costs and ensuring both responsive and responsible government.
Securing the Border
In December of 2023, Customs and Border Patrol reported a record 250,000 encounters on our southern border. However, we have seen over the last six weeks that border encounters have dropped significantly, with monthly crossings down 94% over the previous year and only 8,300 apprehensions in February. This represents the lowest number of apprehensions at our southern border in over 15 years. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security’s new focus on criminal illegal aliens has resulted in arrests of criminal aliens doubling compared to just one year ago.
Although these are significant improvements, I believe we can continue to build on these efforts; not only to reduce illegal crossings, but also to fight the flow of fentanyl over our southern border and end the human trafficking crisis that been fueled by cartels. I will continue my work in Congress to secure our border and protect the American people.
Digital Asset Summit
Today, I had the chance to join the White House Digital Asset Summit. Currently, digital assets like crypto currency operate under confusing or conflicting rules or sometimes without clear rules at all. This dynamic can leave consumers and investors vulnerable to fraud. I was glad to join a roundtable discussion about this issue today.
If you'd like to watch the roundtable click here.
As always, feel free to contact my office if you have any questions, want to share an opinion, or are having trouble with a federal agency.
