Brand New Congress condemns the tragic murder of George Floyd in the strongest possible terms. While the arrest of Derek Chauvin is appreciated, the questionable autopsy report, the leniency of the charges filed, and the department's handling of past abuse of force cases cast serious doubt that justice will be served.
Moreover, Officer Chauvin's accomplices still remain free. We demand that all police officers associated with the murder of George Floyd be held criminally accountable for their actions and that a full investigation into the use of force practices and police misconduct of the Minneapolis Police Department be conducted.
We also unequivocally support the protests in cities across the country that are demanding justice for black communities. These protests are the inevitable outcome of hundreds of years of racist oppression, culminating in the recent murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Sean Reed, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and too many other lives lost.
BNC is committed to racial justice. Until our government and legislative leaders end politice militarization and the systemic criminalization of black people the fight for justice must continue.
