Dear friend,

This past week was filled with hearings, classified briefings, votes, introduction of legislation, meetings with constituent advocacy groups, and the joint session!

Every year, I invite a social guest to the presidential address or State of the Union, and thanks to a colleague I was able to invite two: Mark Ashton, Lead Pastor for Christ Community Church (CCC) in Omaha and Aldena “Dena” Yllescas Johnston, a Gold Star spouse.

“As leader of his congregation at Christ Community, Pastor Mark has helped the church bring aid to the hungry and marginalized victims of natural disasters around the globe; plant churches; launch schools and bring education to nations on three continents.”

On October 28, 2008, Dena’s husband, U.S. Army Capt. Robert J. Yllescas, was injured by an IED (Improvised Explosion Device), losing both of his legs and suffering head injuries. Although there were moments of hope, he succumbed to his injuries on December 1, 2008. The attack occurred during one of the bloodiest American engagements in Operation Enduring Freedom, and was the subject of a 2019 film, The Outpost.

In addition to attending the joint address, I was able to show them a bit of the Capitol and spent time talking about their interests.

I also had the chance to learn more about polycystic ovary syndrome and am thrilled to serve as a co-chair for the PCOS Caucus. PCOS is a serious & overlooked condition impacting over 10 million women in America. I will continue to support legislation ensuring women affected by this condition receive the recognition & support they deserve.

The demand for Amtrak is greater than ever, and I met with them this week to discuss the important service they provide for Nebraskans and Americans nationwide. I’m excited about the future of rail travel.

This week, we introduced bipartisan legislation preserving the U.S. Air Force fighter force & modernizing our Total Force combat-coded fighter squadrons. The U.S. Air Force fighter force is the smallest and oldest in our history and getting smaller by the day. Read more here.

I joined Rep. Joe Morelle (D, NY-25) to introduce two pieces of legislation to advance research, treatment, and prevention of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC). The legislation includes the bipartisan Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Research and Education Act as well as Rep. Morelle’s resolution to officially designate March 3rd as Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Nineteen years ago, I lost my beloved sister, Beth, to breast cancer when she was only 39 years old. I firmly believe with dedicated and aggressive research; we can finally defeat breast cancer. Together, let's fight against this dreaded disease and support all those affected. Read more here.
