A Message from Congresswoman Sherrill Dear Friends, It has been a busy few weeks fighting for New Jersey in Washington. Last week, I voted against the extreme House Republican budget that will make life more expensive for New Jersey families while giving handouts to billionaires like Elon Musk. House Republicans are threatening health care access for 1 in 3 New Jersey children, trying to take away food assistance for nearly 1 in 10 New Jersey families, and working to strip resources from our public schools. I reintroduced my legislation that would ensure that servicewomen and military families stationed in states with extreme abortion bans — like Texas and Florida — can travel to receive reproductive care like abortion and IVF. We ask our servicewomen to put their lives on the line to protect our country from threats across the globe — they should never have to risk their lives or their health to access abortion care here in the United States. Finally, as a member of the Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group, I joined an amicus brief to protect the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a critical federal agency that protects New Jerseyans who have been victims of financial fraud at the hands of big banks or predatory lending agencies. Mikie Sherrill Member of Congress | Standing up for Medicaid, Food Assistance, and our Public Schools | I voted against House Republicans’ extreme budget that dismantles Medicaid, cuts food assistance for vulnerable communities, and strips funding from public schools while giving tax handouts to billionaires like Elon Musk and adding $3.3 trillion to our deficit. This budget is not about responsible spending, government efficiency, or lowering costs for families — in fact, it does the exact opposite. Here’s how Washington Republicans’ extreme budget could hurt New Jersey families: - Threatens the Medicaid coverage of nearly two million New Jerseyans, including almost 800,000 New Jersey children who rely on Medicaid and CHIP for affordable access to care.
- Causes further financial hardships for hospitals, community health care centers, and nursing homes, which will lead many to close their doors.
- Makes it harder for nearly 1 in every 10 New Jersey families to afford their grocery bill.
- Strips funding from our public school system as we work to ensure that every child growing up in New Jersey has access to a good education, no matter what ZIP code they grow up in.
These are New Jerseyans’ hard-earned tax dollars — they must be invested back in our state to help lower costs in our communities. That is why I will continue to fight tooth-and-nail to pass legislation that lowers costs, supports families, and reflects our commitment to serving the American people. | Updates from the Litigation Working Group: Working to Protect Consumers in the Courts | The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is critical to ensuring New Jerseyans are protected from being ripped off by big banks, loan servicers, debt collectors, and payday lenders who break the law. The CFPB has put over $21 billion into Americans’ pockets — including nearly $175 million to veterans and service members who had been victims of financial fraud. Now, Donald Trump and Elon Musk want to dismantle the CFPB to line their own pockets at the expense of working New Jersey families. I signed an amicus brief to support efforts to stop Trump and Musk’s attempt to dismantle the CFPB. I will continue to work as a member of the Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group to protect New Jerseyans from price gouging, hidden junk fees, and other attacks by Trump and his billionaire friends. | Protecting Access to Abortion and IVF for Military Servicewomen | We ask our servicewomen to risk their lives to keep our country safe from threats across the globe — they should never have to put themselves in danger to access abortion care here in the United States. That’s why I reintroduced the Access to Reproductive Care for Servicemembers Act, legislation that ensures servicewomen have the freedom to choose if and when to start a family by restoring policies that allow them to travel to receive reproductive care — whether that’s abortion or IVF. Right now, it’s more important than ever that we take swift action to support those who sign up to serve. Secretary Hegseth has been clear about his belief that women should not be serving in combat — and he took quick action to overturn access to reproductive care for servicewomen shortly after being confirmed. Now, he’s working to undercut our military’s strength by firing our nation’s top military officials — including the first woman to lead the U.S. Navy. This issue is deeply personal to me. I will always fight to ensure that our servicewomen and military family members have access to basic reproductive care. | Need Assistance with a Federal Agency?
