Recent reports that the Trump administration is planning a “sweeping effort” to “repeal or suspend” federal rules affecting business on issues such as workplace safety, health care, and the environment, all in the name of economic recovery from the current pandemic, should come as no surprise. These efforts to shred the social safety net, that began under FDR’s New Deal have become part and parcel of Trump’s presidency. Well before the pandemic, Trump was already pursuing that goal through a combination of regressive policies and far-right judicial nominations. Now, he is using the pandemic as an excuse to continue. As the U.S. passes a grim milestone of 100,000+ deaths due to the coronavirus, recent reports have indicated that we likely would have experienced far fewer casualties if the Trump administration had acted sooner to mitigate the virus's spread. Trump and his Republican enablers continue unabated in their attempts to downplay and dispell such reports while pressuring states into reopening their economies - even while the risk of the coronavirus spreading remains high. Our latest from the "Falsehood and Failures" series highlights some of the most egregious lies from Trump and his Republican enablers this past week. Since the earliest days of the 2020 presidential election campaign, PFAW’s Vote the Courts 2020 campaign has urged presidential primary candidates to voice their plans to nominate fair-minded constitutionalists to our federal courts. Earlier this month, former Vice President Joe Biden, who is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, released a plan for Black America that highlighted the qualities his ideal judicial nominees would possess to further his agenda to tackle systemic racism and fight for civil rights. Even before this crisis, the disability community dealt with biases in health and medical care and struggled to access government benefits. Now, they are experiencing a range of more immediate and urgent problems that further jeopardize their safety and welfare.
