Limiting voter registration by requiring these kinds of documents and making it an in-person process is heinous. I can’t think of anyone who won’t be impacted. Let’s just think about the scenarios: -
Do you know anyone who lives far away from their county’s office, can’t physically get to a county voting office, or doesn’t have the time to get to their county’s voting office?
- Do you have any kids, nieces or nephews, or grandkids who are younger than 18?
- Do you plan to live in your home for the rest of your life, or is there a chance you will move?
- Is there anyone in your life who’s getting married or divorced and might change their name?
I don’t know about you, but I answered yes to all of these. This bill will require that people in any of these scenarios go in person with a birth certificate or passport to register or change their registration.
But here’s what’s really vicious about this bill – it’s going to hurt low-income folks who aren’t likely to have a passport. It’s going to hurt women who changed their names when they got married and won’t be able to use a birth certificate. It’s going to prevent seniors and people in the military who have moved a lot and may have lost their birth certificate over the years. Think about survivors of natural disasters and extreme weather events like the fires in California who’ve lost everything.
Trump and Musk want to wipe millions of voters from the voter rolls so that they can hold onto power and pass laws that will enrich their billionaire oil and gas CEO donors. And if this thing passes, they’ll get their wish.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers need to be put on notice that their constituents are watching their votes and there will be consequences. We need everyone speaking out right now. Send a message to your lawmakers right now and tell them to vote against this attack on your right to vote. |
