Kash Patel was just confirmed as the new FBI Director - this is a development that threatens to undermine years of progress we’ve made together to curb gun violence. Given Patel's disturbing history of partisanship and disregard for evidence-based policies, there is a real concern among gun violence prevention advocates that vital measures like background check enforcement and the investigation of domestic extremism could be abandoned under his leadership.

The Patel nomination, coupled with the elimination of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, clearly signals that the Trump administration will knowingly jeopardize public safety in order to appease the gun lobby. We know from experience that our best defense is to strengthen advocacy and accountability at the state level. From passing state laws to public education and implementation, local action is the most powerful force for sustainable progress.

Now is the time to act decisively to protect our progress and save lives. We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines.
