As this annual recognition approaches — and throughout Women’s History Month — I am reflecting on the history, accomplishments, and contributions women have made to society.

From educational events like the Women’s History Fair to networking events designed to build community for young women in San Diego, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate our shared history and the progress yet to come. That’s why I want to know: how are you celebrating this Women’s History Month? [[link removed]]

It is always amazing to celebrate resilience, leadership, and the power of community.

This Women’s History Month, I’m focused on honoring the women, and particularly women of color in our civic life, who came before me.

There would be no Monica Montgomery Steppe without suffragettes like Sojourner Truth and trailblazing elected officials like Shirley Chisholm. And we have our own history makers in San Diego politics like Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber and Geneviéve Jones-Wright, to California’s very own Kamala Harris.

The women who came before me broke down barriers and helped make me the elected official I am today. As the first Black woman to serve on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, I stand on the foundation they helped build.

Through my work, I hope to keep the door open for the next generation of women leaders.

This month is a celebration of the tenacity and fearlessness of the women who have helped all of us become the people we are today, and a celebration of all we will continue to accomplish, together.
