John, it’s Senate Democratic Leader Janice Weiner.
We just had the first “funnel” week of the 2025 legislative session in the Iowa Senate. Every bill had to pass out of one chamber’s committee, or else it would be dead.
I wanted to briefly share with you examples of bills Republicans advanced through the funnel, and ones they killed.
Some of the legislation that is still alive :
👎 SF138 - A bill that could create a high school elective course on the Bible.
👎 SF 504 - A bill that gives $1 billion in tax breaks for the wealthiest corporations.
👎 SSB1051 - A bill that bans Iowans from suing pesticide manufacturers for causing cancer.
👎 HF521 - A bill that would allow school and public librarians to be put in jail.
These are not bills that will help address the problems faced by everyday Iowans.
Now, here are some of the Democrats’ bills that Republicans killed :
SF109 - A bill that would have provided paid family leave for Iowans.
SF157 - A bill that would have increased the maximum number of unemployment weeks for Iowans from 16 to 26.
SJR1 - A Resolution that proposed a Constitutional Amendment protecting the right to reproductive health care in Iowa
SF63 - A bill that would have created an Iowa cancer research program–so that we actually work to address our rising cancer rates!
It’s clear what Senate Republicans’ agenda is, and it is nowhere near in line with what Iowans want. This extreme agenda will do nothing to help improve our public schools, lower costs for working families, or overall expand economic opportunities for anyone–except for the wealthiest corporations.
Iowa Senate Democrats are fighting to deliver a better deal for all Iowans.
