Dear John,

International Women’s Day – Saturday, March 8 – is your opportunity to support women and girls around the world. ([link removed]) Now more than ever, women and girls are counting on us – Equality Now and you, our global community – to stand up and speak out against injustices and threats to human rights. Can we count on your support?

GIVE NOW ([link removed])
Since our founding in 1992, Equality Now has advocated for laws that promote legal equality. Our work is essential and offers critical support to women and girls worldwide.

As co-founder and secretariat to the Solidarity for African Women's Rights (SOAWR) coalition, we have worked with our partners to urge all countries in the African Union to ratify the Maputo Protocol, a progressive agreement guaranteeing extensive rights to African women and girls. Thus far, 45 of 55 members of the African Union have ratified the Protocol. The Maputo Protocol – and legislation it has helped advance – can serve as a foundation for strategic litigation cases to further expand and protect women and girls’ rights. ([link removed]) Take, for example, the case of JMM.

JMM was 14 years old when she was raped and became pregnant. She received an abortion from an unqualified individual in Kenya, resulting in devastating impacts to her health. At 18 years old, she passed away from kidney failure. Her case, presented by her mother with support from SOAWR members, focused on ensuring access to safe abortions for survivors of sexual violence in Kenya.

The Court held that pregnancies resulting from rape may be aborted if they pose a danger to the mother’s physical, mental, or social wellbeing. They also determined that training on safe abortions needed to continue, and that any other alternative was unlawful. To come to this decision, the Court referred to the Maputo Protocol, specifically Article 14, which highlights the right to safe abortion in the case of sexual assault, rape, incest, or when the pregnancy endangers the mother.
The potential impact and benefits of the Maputo Protocol are clear. Now, Equality Now needs your help to ensure the final 10 members of the African Union ratify the Protocol, extending protections to millions of African women and girls. ([link removed])

P.S. Reform takes time, sometimes years or even decades. Equality Now relies on long-term funding to see efforts, like the Maputo Protocol, through to the end. That’s why I ask you today to please make a donation of $25, $50, or more, or to consider setting up a monthly gift. ([link removed]) Thank you for your continued support.
