Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Five weeks into the House Republican majority, and we’re just getting started! It’s been another busy and productive week at the Capitol—full of committee hearings, great conversations with constituents, and introductions of legislation that will make a real difference for Minnesotans across the state. With the special election on March 11 fast approaching, House Republicans are staying focused and working hard to deliver common-sense policies that put families, businesses, and communities first.

One of the highlights of my week was sitting down with folks to talk about agriculture—an issue that’s not just policy to me, but personal. As a farmer myself, I know firsthand the challenges our ag community faces, and I’ll always fight to ensure Minnesota’s farmers have the resources and support they need to thrive.

Minnesota’s Budget Forecast: The Consequences of Out-of-Control Spending

Minnesota’s updated budget forecast paints a concerning picture—our state is on an unsustainable financial path. The projected budget surplus has shrunk again, and now we’re staring down a nearly $6 billion deficit in the FY 2028-29 biennium. That’s $852 million worse than just a few months ago. It’s clear that the Democrats' tax-and-spend approach is catching up with us, and if we don’t course correct, hardworking Minnesotans will be left paying the price.

House Republicans have been sounding the alarm on this for years. We cannot keep growing government at the expense of taxpayers. Instead, we should be cutting wasteful spending, delivering permanent tax relief, and ensuring our economy remains strong for generations to come.

Minnesota families balance their budgets every day—it’s time for the state to do the same. I will continue fighting for responsible fiscal policies that put taxpayers first and prevent future financial crises caused by reckless government overreach.

Investing in Innovation for Minnesota Farmers

I’m thrilled to author House File 857 [ [link removed] ], a bill that directs much-needed funding to the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI)—an organization that has been making a real difference in Minnesota agriculture for over 35 years. This bill provides $4.5 million in both 2026 and 2027 to help AURI continue its incredible work of researching, developing, and finding new ways to add value to our farm products here in Minnesota.

AURI has a proven track record of success, boasting an impressive 45-to-1 return on investment. That means every dollar we put in comes back in ways that help our farmers, create jobs, and strengthen rural economies. Whether it’s new uses for crops, turning byproducts into valuable resources, or helping ag entrepreneurs bring their ideas to market, AURI is leading the charge in Ag innovation.

Minnesota’s agriculture industry is the backbone of our state, and we need to keep pushing forward with smart investments that ensure our farmers can compete, grow, and thrive. This funding does just that, and I’m proud to support it!

Standing with Riley Gaines in the Fight for Fairness
1

A huge shoutout to Riley Gaines for coming to Minnesota and standing up for fairness in girls’ sports! Her passion and courage in speaking out on this issue is nothing short of inspiring. As a former NCAA swimmer, she’s seen firsthand how important it is to protect the integrity of women’s athletics, and I couldn’t be more grateful for her leadership.

Title IX changed the game for female athletes, opening doors that were once shut and giving generations of young women the opportunity to compete, earn scholarships, and chase their dreams. I believe that’s something worth protecting.

It was an absolute honor to stand with Riley in this fight. Girls deserve a level playing field—plain and simple. I’ll always stand up for their right to compete, and I’m so thankful for national advocates like Riley who refuse to back down!
