The GOP's proposed changes to federal elections present a threat to our democracy and voting rights.
The so-called Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act—which requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections—is spreading falsehoods about immigrants to justify making it harder for communities of color to exercise their right to vote.  
Here are the facts:
All 50 states already require verification of citizenship status for voter registration.
Federal law already imposes steep penalties for non-citizens voting in U.S. elections, including imprisonment and deportation. 
The legislation is premised on irrational fear of immigrants, as there is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting.
The legislation would make it harder to register to vote by requiring citizens to present—in person—a U.S. passport that matches the name on their birth certificate. This could disenfranchise Americans without passports and even married women who have changed their names.
