Donald Trump made one thing clear in his speech on Tuesday to a joint
session of Congress: He and Elon Musk are coming after Social Security.
In a bald-faced lie, Trump claimed on Tuesday night that Social Security
is subject to "shocking levels of incompetence and probable fraud."^1
Yes, that's precisely the red herring he and Elon Musk give each time,
without a lick of evidence, for dismantling the essential programs so many
of us rely on, as well as critical public safety protections, in order to
even further line the pockets of their billionaire buddies.
Over the weekend, Musk called Social Security "the biggest Ponzi scheme of
all time."^2
As a first step, the Trump administration announced on Friday that it was
eliminating 7,000 jobs and closing regional Social Security offices.^3
Martin O'Malley, the former commissioner of the Social Security
Administration, said in response that these cuts alone could result in the
"collapse" of the Social Security system "within the next 30 to 90
days."^4
By gutting Social Security, Musk, Donald Trump, and their billionaire
friends will benefit from massive tax cuts and profit from our struggle.
John, we all deserve to retire with dignity, and Social
Security is a lifeline for more than 72 million Americans.^5 We MUST fight
