Brad Lander for NYC Mayor

John,

Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. But in New York City, rent is too high, people are being displaced, and no one can afford to own a home.

That’s why today, as reported in the New York Times, I announced the most common-sense, comprehensive solution to solve the housing crisis of any candidate in this race.

On Day One of my administration, I will declare a housing state of emergency and build 500,000 new housing units in the next 10 years.

Brad's Housing Solution: Build 500,000 new units of housing in the next 10 years and triple the City's capital spending on housing

There’s a lot more in my 36-page policy proposal, but here are some of the highlights. When I’m Mayor, I will:

  • Triple the City’s capital spending on housing
  • Increase housing density on key sites including municipal golf courses, state- and city-owned land, and other private sites
  • Make it easier to add housing through co-living models, zoning reform, and expanding basement and accessory dwelling units
  • Protect tenants and prevent evictions by defending the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act, fully funding the Right to Counsel program, and reforming the Rent Guidelines Board
  • Make it easier to add housing through co-living models, zoning reform, and expanding basement and accessory dwelling units
  • Reduce homelessness by improving CityFHEPS rental vouchers, upgrading the housing lottery system, and creating a new rental assistance program
  • Help more working-class families OWN their own homes with homeownership programs Prohibit discrimination in the housing market and provide support to coops and condos
  • Reform the broken and unfair NYC property tax system to reduce costs for working-class homeowners
  • Breathe new life into the City’s housing agencies, HPD and NYCHA
  • Empower NYCHA residents and rehabilitate thousands of public housing units every year
  • Improve resident experience with updated technology, like a “Yelp” for NYCHA that holds contractors accountable for repairs

John, I’ve spent most of my adult life fighting to make housing more affordable and livable. I’m proud to be the candidate with the most comprehensive housing plan — and also the only candidate with experience with actually building housing.

Together, we can build a New York City where everyone has a safe, affordable home, can envision their future, and get ahead.

Thank you,

Brad
