March 2025

Dear John,

I hope March is starting off well for you. Women’s History Month, celebrated in March, invites us to delve into the achievements and challenges faced by women throughout history, emphasizing their vital roles in shaping our society. Our resources offer valuable insights into the contributions of women and I hope that you will incorporate these tools into your teaching this month.

I also want to share an update on behalf of the ADL Education team. ADL is making important updates to our educational content. Over the past few years, antisemitism has increased significantly in K-12 schools across the United States and around the world. To help address this disturbing trend, we are focusing our online resources and expertise on creating content on antisemitism, the Holocaust and Jewish identity. While we are no longer hosting as many broader anti-bias resources, we remain deeply committed to fostering inclusive school communities.

We know these materials have been valuable to many educators, and we appreciate your ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments. We encourage you to explore our updated resources and continue partnering with us in this vital work.

If you have any questions about this shift in ADL’s content, or you are looking for alternative recommendations, please let me or your local ADL Education contact know. Thank you for being part of our community.

Regards,
Ariel Behrman

VP, Education (Interim)

Guidelines for Effective Holocaust Instruction for Grades 3-6

Teaching about the Holocaust can be challenging but it is a critical piece of history for students to explore. Through a sound study of the Holocaust, students gain an understanding of the dangers and consequences of unchecked antisemitism and hate and can grow into responsible citizens.

Echoes & Reflections recognizes the growing need to support upper elementary educators to introduce this history in a safe and supportive way. The guidelines and resources below are intended to provide educators of students grades 3-6 with the framework and guidance to deliver appropriate and impactful instruction on the Holocaust. Our guideline includes a helpful glossary of terms that is leveled for younger students, teacher knowledge and enrichment, recommendations on resources and guidance for families.

THE IMPACT OF EDUCATION

At last month’s BBYO international conference in Denver, ADL Education played a key role. BBYO is a leading pluralistic Jewish teen movement, and their annual event brings together Jewish student leaders from around the world. We facilitated 3 Words to Action workshops for a total of 90 students from international delegations from Europe, Latin America, Africa and Australia. The post-event survey revealed the impact of Words to Action, with 87% of the participants feeling more confident about choosing if and how they will respond to instances of antisemitism they encounter.

We also kicked off engagement with BBYO’s Rise Up cohort of teens who are working to combat antisemitism in their home communities. We will work with them to create a curriculum of Words to Action workshops that will prepare them to lead complex conversations about Jewish identity, antisemitism and more with their Jewish and non-Jewish peers.
