Arizona lawmakers are trying to ram through a bill that could jeopardize fair maps, fair representation, and the fair distribution of resources around the state.
Here’s what you need to know, John: The proposed legislation would propose a constitutional amendment to create a separate census for Arizona that could undercount immigrant communities and communities of color — giving them less representation in the halls of power and less access to critical funding.
This bill has already passed the state senate and could come up for a vote in the state house soon.
All On The Line is mobilizing Arizonans against this bill, but defeating this kind of anti-voter attack — and making sure this type of playbook cannot be replicated across the country — requires strong grassroots support.

If passed, this plan would force Arizona to conduct its own census every decade that explicitly excludes non-citizens, instead of relying on the existing federal census, like every other state has done for nearly a century, as the U.S. Constitution requires a federal census.
Many problems could come up with requiring a separate census, including:
• Taxpayers might have to cover a potential price tag of around $300 million.
• If Arizonans are asked to fill out a new state census, they might think they don’t need to complete the federal version around that same time. That could lead to the state having less representation in Congress, fewer votes in the Electoral College, and reduced federal funding.
• Arizonans might avoid filling in the state version because of the citizenship question or because the new census doesn’t have clear privacy protections. And low response rates could make the data useless or wildly unrepresentative.
Ultimately, by targeting people who aren’t citizens, this legislation is designed to create fear and division — threatening fair representation, critical funding, and the well-being of Arizona communities.
We must stand united against undemocratic, unfair, and unnecessary efforts like this in Arizona and beyond. Will you make a donation right now to help fight back against attempts to undermine our democracy? → [link removed]
