There was a recent report that a quarter of folks living in New York City can’t afford basic needs — whether it’s healthcare, housing, or food.

The trendlines speak for themselves. It’s no wonder that Trump just held Democrats to our worst statewide performance since 1988.

It’s also no wonder Trump’s already broken all his campaign promises. He ran like a populist, but governs like an oligarch, filling his administration with billionaires who are determined to fleece our country for all that it is worth.

We did not have to be in this moment. But we are.

For too long, the Democratic establishment has enabled a political order that has completely acquiesced to corporate power and private greed — an order that the American people don’t trust. Our party has ignored the real pain of the people and failed to deliver meaningful policies that speak to this pain.

When I first ran for office after the 2016 presidential election, I did so because I believed we needed more leaders in government willing to hold themselves accountable to the people — and only the people. I believe that now more than ever.

That’s why I am proud to announce an exploratory committee that will engage with New Yorkers about where we go from here. I believe we need a new generation of Democratic leadership. If you’re with me, will you chip in $10 now?

We as Democrats will come out of this wilderness. But the era of half-measures and empty promises must be over.

It’s time for bold politics that will provide economic security for all New Yorkers; from universal childcare and health care, to housing built for low and middle income families, to ensuring a livable wage.
