# [#]This is a long email, but I hope you’ll keep reading. On Tuesday night, President Trump delivered his first address to a joint session of Congress since taking office 6 weeks ago. Honestly, I debated whether or not to attend, given Trump’s brazen disrespect for Congress.
Ultimately, I decided that attending was the best way to clearly demonstrate the devastating impacts his administration’s DOGE cuts have on communities like ours.
My guest for the address was Dr. Jim Brewer, a medical professor and chair of UC San Diego’s Department of Neurosciences, the top National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded neuroscience department in the country – where he leads critical and life-saving research on Alzheimer’s disease.
Under the Trump Administration’s proposed NIH funding cuts – $800 million in California alone – Dr. Brewer’s patients will lose access to clinical trials for potentially life-changing treatments, families will lose hope for their affected loved ones, and research on the cusp of finding cures will come to a halt.
These cuts will cost lives, hurt the broader economy, and jeopardize America’s position as a world leader in science and innovation.
What’s especially frustrating is that this is being done under the false pretense of “cutting waste.” You know what’s actually wasteful? Throwing out the results of clinical trials made possible by the investments of taxpayers.
It’s short-sighted and wildly harmful.
Our district receives nearly $1 billion in NIH grant funding every year, which is more than any other district in California. San Diego is home to world-class public and private research institutions and private companies that have propelled the field forward, turning discoveries into therapies and cures.
The biotech industry and medical research institutions like Dr. Brewer’s department at UCSD have deep roots in our community and have long provided care and services on which many San Diegans rely. We can’t afford to lose that, NAME.
Rest assured that I will use every tool at my disposal in Congress to protect our communities and fight back against Trump’s dangerous agenda.
Thanks for standing with me.
