Trump and Musk have frozen funding for climate disaster relief, gutting vital government programs to pay for billionaire tax cuts. One of their primary targets: the climate and clean energy programs that are putting us on a path to cutting carbon pollution 40 percent by 2030, while creating over nine million jobs and lowering our energy prices.

Trump does not have the authority to stop funding for programs already approved by Congress. But that's what he's doing, even going so far as to defy court orders. Congress must fight back to defend the laws of the land, and to keep these critical programs running to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the climate we depend on.

What this means for us:The leaders we elected to represent us in Washington should be acting in our interest and doing everything they can to build a future powered by 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
But instead of listening to voters, Trump is:
- Firing thousands of hardworking, dedicated civil servants who devoted their careers to protecting our environment.
- Throwing out 50 years' worth of rules implementing the National Environmental Policy Act – the bedrock environmental safeguard designed to protect communities and give them a voice in federal decisions.
- Fast-tracking the construction of dirty energy projects such as the Line 5 pipeline and LNG methane gas exports that will pollute our water and climate.
- Proposing plans to destroy climate progress and raise energy prices by repealing clean energy and climate programs in the Inflation Reduction Act. This is the Project 2025 playbook that Trump promised he wouldn't follow. He's hurting all of us – including his own supporters and even Republicans in Congress – by padding the pockets of his billionaire friends instead of protecting working people.

What happens next:

Repealing the Inflation Reduction Act’s climate and clean energy programs will require Congress to pass new legislation. And with the margins in the House and Senate being so slim, every ounce of pressure that we can put on our federal representatives to keep these programs intact will make a difference. After all, they are supposed to represent us, not the corporate polluters who want to kill clean energy!

Over the next few weeks and months, Congress will debate Trump’s plan to pay for his tax cuts for billionaires and fossil fuel corporations by gutting clean energy and climate programs. Now is the time to stop his dangerous and reckless plan.
