Freedom is under attack. Around the world, people are jailed, silenced, and even disappeared for speaking out. Entire communities live under constant surveillance, their rights stripped away.

You may not be on the front lines, but Freedom House is. For over 80 years, this national treasure has defended democracy around the world, helping persecuted dissidents find safety, exposing authoritarian abuse, and mobilizing policymakers to act. Our vision is a world where all people are free.

Today our work is at risk.

On January 20, an Executive Order froze and suspended all U.S. foreign assistance, including grant funding. The order abruptly halted our life-saving emergency assistance for nearly 400 urgent cases—affecting thousands of human rights defenders, religious believers, journalists, and civil society advocates worldwide. Many are now in hiding, some will become homeless, and countless others face a dangerous and uncertain future.

Individuals in urgent need of life-saving assistance include:

-Afghan women who ran for public office after the U.S. military withdrawal, bravely opposing the Taliban and now facing death threats along with their families.

-Iranian journalists who have continuously reported on human rights violations by Iran’s repressive regime and have faced death threats, torture, and state harassment.

-Activists in the Central African Republic who report on armed mercenaries operating at home and in neighboring countries.

-Pastors and believers from house churches facing persecution in authoritarian regimes.
