John -- On this day 99 years ago, the 19th Amendment was ratified, finally giving women the right to vote!

For almost a century, women have been making our marks at the polls. When you go from being treated as a second-class citizen to a voter with a voice, incredible things happen. Women, and our allies, have organized for and voted to protect reproductive rights and guarantee equal pay for equal work -- and our increased participation in our democratic process has led even more women to seek office themselves.

We’ve made immense progress since 1920, but sadly, the fight for voting rights must continue today. After the Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision gutted the Voting Rights Act, we’ve seen an increase in voter suppression laws targeting people of color, seniors, and low income communities.

In Georgia’s 2018 gubernatorial race, Secretary of State and candidate Brian Kemp purged thousands of voters from the rolls, closed polling places, and implemented strict voter registration requirements. In North Dakota, the 2018 midterms were rocked by a last-minute state Supreme Court decision that prevented Native Americans with P.O. boxes listed on their IDs from voting. Here in Pennsylvania, we had to sue to overturn unconstitutional voter ID and extreme gerrymandering laws.

This is exactly the kind of voter suppression that Democrats are fighting against with H.R. 1, the For the People Act. The House passed this landmark bill to expand voting rights in early March, but it still has not seen a vote in the Senate thanks to the “Grim Reaper” of progressive legislation, Mitch McConnell.

On this important anniversary of women’s suffrage, I encourage us all -- especially Sen. McConnell -- to reflect on the importance of voting rights. Encouraging more Americans to participate in our political process will only lead to better policy and a stronger democracy, and I will continue fighting to protect our votes in Congress.

Thank you,
Mary Gay
