Hey everybody, it’s Ruben Gallego.
It’s been kind of stunning to see my colleagues across the aisle running away from the people they represent over the last few weeks.
That doesn’t sit right with me. If they’re too afraid to show up, I will.
I’m going to start holding “Save Medicaid” town halls in rural Arizona. I’m going to show up in the parts of my state where most of the people voted against me last year, and I’m going to talk to those folks about what the Trump administration, Elon Musk, and Republicans in Congress are doing.
People are pissed, and for good reason. Elon Musk and Donald Trump are taking a chainsaw to the federal government. They’re firing thousands of workers, including at least 6000 veterans so far. The VA is under attack, Social Security is at risk, and Republicans in the House just passed a budget resolution with $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid in it.
And, it’s weird — we saw all of them cheering Trump on at his joint address to the House and Senate on Tuesday night. They’re clearly on board. Why are they so scared to talk to their voters about it?
I think I know: More than two million Arizonans are enrolled in Medicaid, and millions more around the country depend on it. Republicans are scared of these town halls because they’re going to rip health care away from millions of people to pass trillions of dollars in tax breaks for the richest people in the country.
The way we’re going to stop them is by increasing the volume. We’ve got to make this hurt — and that means we’ve got to get out and tell people what Trump, Elon, and the GOP are trying to do.
That’s why I’m heading out to rural Arizona for these “Save Medicaid” town halls. To face the people I represent, and drive that message home.
