Monthly giving fuels feminist action
At a time where the rights of women, girls, trans, and non-binary people in Canada are under threat, LEAF seeks your partnership in safeguarding hard-won victories and advancing gender equality through legal advocacy.
One imminent concern is the increasing use of the notwithstanding clause by provinces to pass discriminatory laws, such as Quebec’s Law 21, which has restricted the wearing of religious symbols in certain professions since 2019.
With your support, we intervened in the constitutional challenge of the law, demonstrating how it infringes the Charter’s guarantee of gender equality. We continue to monitor the case as it makes its way before the Supreme Court.
Our involvement doesn’t stop at litigation. This past January, we hosted a bilingual panel on the discriminatory impacts of Law 21 on Muslim women. The panelists’ perspectives were grounded in academic research, legal expertise and lived reality. To learn more about the impacts of the law, read our factsheet.
