*Governor Mills, please comply with Title IX to protect our girls and the federal funds that support all Maine students*
"The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has issued a notice of violation against the Maine Department of Education for violating Title IX"
STATE HOUSE – Maine House Republicans are calling on the Mills Administration to reverse its support of allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.
This public call to action comes after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a notice of violation against the Maine Department of Education for violating Title IX.
Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational program and activities, including girls’ sports, ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls in athletics. Since it was enacted in 1972, female participation in sports has increased significantly at the high school and college levels.
The Maine Department of Education has been under investigation since Governor Mills indicated to the President of the United States, at a White House event, that she would not comply with federal law.
The letter highlights that, since 2024, the Maine Department of Education received $703,086 from the U.S. DHHS. It goes on to state that, because Maine is allowing male athletes to compete against female athletes, the Maine Department of Education is violating Title IX because it is denying female student athletes “an equal opportunity” to participate in athletics.
“It is a matter of scientific fact that biological males have a physical advantage over biological females,” said House Republican Leader Billy Bob Faulkingham. “Title IX was passed in 1972 to protect girls’ spaces in sports. Allowing biological boys to compete with our girls, is not only unpopular, and unfair, but it is also illegal. Governor Mills should abandon this indefensible position and uphold Title IX protections for our girls.”
"The Mills Administration’s policy of allowing biological boys in girls' sports has physically and mentally mistreated our young ladies and now this same policy will harm "every "child and teacher with the loss of federal funds to our schools,” said Assistant House Republican Leader Katrina Smith. “Enough is enough, it is time to put away radical ideology and put the future of our kids first.”
