City of Milwaukee Held in Contempt

On February 27, Judge David Borowski held the City of Milwaukee in contempt of court for failure to comply with a Writ of Mandamus which commanded the City to take all steps necessary to comply with state law and ensure the legally required number of School Resource Officer (SROs) were available to Milwaukee Public Schools.

WILL Associate Counsel, Lauren Greuel, stated, “We will be back in court as often as necessary until the law is followed. We appreciate the Judge’s order, including the fines necessary to compel compliance. We look forward to MPS and the City of Milwaukee taking immediate action.”

Milwaukee parent and WILL client, Charlene Abughrin, expressed, “All we have seen from MPS, and the City, is delay, delay, and delay. Their excuses and lack of action have continually frustrated parents and students in our community—frankly enough is enough.”

WILL Identifies Misuse of Tax Dollars by States Like Wisconsin & New York

On behalf of Contractors for Equal Opportunity (CEO), WILL filed two Title VI civil rights complaints with Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the U.S. Department of Justice against the “Wisconsin Supplier Diversity Program” and the “New York Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise Program.”

Both programs unlawfully use federal funds to discriminate against businesses based on race. In turn, these programs harm CEO members’ ability to compete for government contracts on an equal footing. In addition to race discrimination, these “diversity” programs drive up the cost of government to the taxpayers. WILL estimates that 19 different states—both “red” and “blue”—have similar programs (as do many cities).

WILL continues to challenge race-based government contracting programs where we are able. WILL and CEO’s latest efforts were recently highlighted in the New York Post.

WILL Deputy Counsel, Dan Lennington, stated “Taxpayers deserve an efficient and colorblind government. We hope that Attorney General Bondi and the Department of Justice will act quickly to end this widespread misuse of taxpayer money. The actions of Wisconsin, New York, and numerous other states clearly violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and additional legal action is forthcoming.”

President Trump promised an unprecedented rollback of unconstitutional DEI policies and programs across the federal government. So far, his administration has made great progress, but the fight is not over.

Village of Slinger Backs Down On Sign Ordinance

The Village of Slinger has withdrawn enforcement of its unconstitutional sign ordinances. WILL warned the Village last week that it was preparing to take legal action if the Village did not confirm that these ordinances would not be enforced.

Our efforts stemmed from residents of the village stating that their signs and flags indicating support for President Donald Trump was somehow a violation of the law.

WILL Associate Counsel, Nathalie Burmeister, stated, “Government actors, no matter how big, small, or local, must adhere to the rights and liberties the U.S. Constitution guarantees American citizens."
