Remember the Alamo!

This is the Texas Minute for Thursday, March 6, 2025.

Texas House Keeps Democrat Adviser Hugh Brady on Payroll at $233K Newly obtained records from the Texas House Business Office confirm that Hugh Brady, the former parliamentarian of the Texas House, continues to receive the same six-figure taxpayer-funded salary he earned in his previous role... despite not being reappointed this session. Brandon Waltens has the story [[link removed]].

Brady, a longtime Democrat lawyer and activist, remains active in controlling the House proceedings under the new title of “parliamentary counsel.”

Records obtained by Texas Scorecard confirm that Brady is continuing to receive a $233,730 salary—much higher than the salary of the governor.

Brady has been a fixture in the Texas House since 2019, when former Speaker Dennis Bonnen first appointed him as parliamentarian. Before that, he served as general counsel for the White House Office of Administration under President Barack Obama from 2014 to 2017 and as parliamentarian for the Travis County Democrat Party. Senators Tackle Public School ‘Obscenity Exemptions’ Under current state law, schools can expose minors to obscene content under the guise of “educational” purposes. But, as Erin Anderson reports [[link removed]], that could soon change. Members of the Texas Senate are advancing legislation that would remove that exemption.

“Protecting children from sexualization and obscene materials has to be a priority of this legislature,” said State Sen. Mayes Middleton [[link removed]] (R-Galveston), who authored the legislation.

Under Middleton's legislation, the only exceptions to the penal code for harmful material and sexual performance of a child would be for judicial or law enforcement officers performing their official duties.

Shannon Ayres, a Plano parent and state education director for the advocacy group Citizens Defending Freedom, said school districts have used the obscenity exemptions to make explicit materials available to children.MORE SENATE NEWS Texas Senators Approve $3 Billion Dementia Research Institute [[link removed]]

State Sen. Kelly Hancock (R-Fort Worth) cited fiscal concerns as his reason for being the sole vote against the creation of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's marquee proposal.

'Most Wanted' Illegal Alien Captured in San Antonio An illegal alien designated by the Texas Department of Public Safety as one of the top ten most wanted in the state has been apprehended in San Antonio. Cameroon national Clarence Enyi Mfor was wanted for sexual assault and the violent assault of a family member. Will Biagini has the report [[link removed]].

Mfor had been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents back in 2023 but was released from detention. He was first arrested in California by ICE in 2019. US Rep. Sylvester Turner, Houston's Former Mayor, Has Died U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) died early Wednesday morning. Joseph Trimmer reports [[link removed]] that an official cause of death has not been released.

Turner was first elected to the Texas House in 1988, where he served for 27 years. He then spent 8 years as mayor. In 2024, Turner was elected to the U.S. House, replacing the late U.S. Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee.

The governor will soon set a date for a special election to fill Turner’s seat in Congress for the remainder of the term. Montgomery County GOP Censures Two State Reps Republican State Reps. Cecil Bell, Jr. of Magnolia and Will Metcalf of Montgomery were censured by the Montgomery County GOP this week. Ian Camacho reports [[link removed]] four incumbent lawmakers have now been censured by local party activists.

Bell and Metcalf were censured for their actions opposing the Texas GOP caucus nominee for speaker. The Montgomery County GOP resolution also condemns them for violating the spirit and intent of the party's “No Democrat Chairs” legislative priority.

They aren't the first to be censured. Last month, the Dallas County GOP voted to censure State Reps. Morgan Meyer (R-Dallas) and Angie Chen Button (R-Richardson) for actions deemed “in opposition to the core principles of the Republican Party of Texas’ Platform and the Legislative Priorities.” Today in History

Shortly before dawn on Sunday, March 6, 1836, the 13-day siege of the Alamo came to an end when Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his soldiers to attack and kill the 200 defenders.

"No rendirse, muchachos!"

Don't surrender, boys!

– William Travis, March 6, 1836

As quoted by non-combatants who were allowed to survive the attack.
