Dear John,
This February marked three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Now, more than ever, Europe must stand united. Three years on, Europe must do its utmost to support the Ukrainian struggle for freedom, self-determination and a just and lasting peace. As the Trump administration turns its back on its allies, now is the time for the EU to step up its integration - including by deepening defence and security cooperation.
We are fighting back. We will not bow down to the Russian threat. Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security.

🇺🇦 Today and always, stand with Ukraine
Three long years since Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This is a war of aggression, an attack on European freedom, a threat to democracy, and a violation of international law. Russia’s actions blatantly disregard Ukraine’s sovereignty.
President Trump has announced that the United States is abandoning Ukraine and pausing all military aid. The Green answer is clear: we are united in our support for Ukraine.
Ahead of today’s Special European Council on Ukraine, European Greens from around Europe call on EU leaders to take urgent measures to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom and deepen defence cooperation.
It’s high time that Europe takes responsibility for security and defence.

🌻 Congratulations to the German Greens!
We congratulate Robert Habeck and all at Bündnis 90/Die Grünen on a great campaign!
Bündnis 90/Die Grünen achieved their second-best federal election result ever. With 11.6% and 85 seats in the German parliament this is a respectable result, particularly in the context of three years in a difficult coalition and in an extremely challenging international context, including smear campaigns against them, likely by Russia undertaking foreign interference.
The Greens in German government have left a significant mark. Their achievements, especially in the energy transition, have changed daily life in Germany. The next government should not make these achievements go to waste, and continue to transform Germany and Europe in a more just and green direction.

👏 Big wins of the French Greens
France took a huge step against forever chemicals!
Thanks to our friends from our French member party Les Ecologistes - EELV, the French Parliament passed a bill to ban PFAS (so-called forever chemicals) and protect people and planet from its effects. This is one of the most ambitious bills ever passed on PFAS in the EU. It will ban the use of PFAS and force polluters to pay for the pollution they cause.
Unfortunately, the ban doesn’t extend to cooking ware, one of the major sources of PFAS, as the chemical lobbyists pushed hard against it.
Les Ecologistes – EELV have also made big progress for tax justice. A bill to tax the ultra-rich at 2% of their wealth was recently passed by the French Parliament - a proposal from EELV.
This is big news. If passed in the Senate, this would mean that 15 to 25 billion euros could be invested in public services yearly. A much-needed, massive boost for public transport, social housing, public education, food, and the green transition of course!

🌈 We’ve come so far, let’s not backtrack now!
The LGBTQ+ community is being weaponised by the far right to spread hate and fear, when all they want is equal rights and freedoms.
ILGA Europe has collected information from around Europe showing a troubling rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
There is an increase in bullying at school, harassment and discrimination in many European countries, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.
We must stand united against this wave of hatred. We must keep fighting for equal rights.
Love must win.
As every year, the European Greens will be present at the fabulous Brussels Pride. We are looking forward to hopefully seeing many of you there on 17th May.

🫰 Let’s make abortion safe & accessible for all!
We continue our support for the My Voice, My Choice initiative! They still need 90,000 signatures before April to demand the EU to make abortion safe and accessible for all.

How do we equip our vision of freedom for an era of far-right politics, technological revolutions, and climate breakdown? How can we successfully master emotions and affect, using them as mobilising forces for progressive politics? These are some of the questions the next print edition of the Green European Journal will explore. If you would like to pitch a story, interview, or article on what freedom means in a time of deep polarisation and geopolitical tension, check the open call for contributors here ([link removed] ) .
