Dear Friend,
Many of our baptized Catholic
brothers and sisters have passed into eternal life with a sin-stained
soul. Family members, relatives, co-workers, parishioners, loved ones,
neighbors, acquaintances and yes, even bishops, priests, deacons,
brothers and nuns, are being purified in purgatory.
Do something this Lent that will be
most pleasing to Our Blessed Mother, who is the Queen of the Holy
Souls in Purgatory. Give Our Lady your indulgences to be applied to
the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Mention the names of souls who have died.
Ask the Mother of Divine Mercy to apply your indulgence(s) to them.
St. Bernardine of Siena said, “Through her prayers and the application
of her own merits, the Virgin has the power of freeing souls,
especially her devotees, from Purgatory.”
For those of you who are not
familiar with an indulgence, it can be either a partial or full
remission of punishment for sins after certain requirements are
met.
In order to obtain a plenary
indulgence, the faithful must:
~ have an interior disposition of
complete detachment from sin, even venial sin
~ sacramentally confess their sins
20 days before or after receiving the indulgence
~ receive Holy Communion
(preferably on the same day)
~ pray for the intentions of the
Holy Father; one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be
If those requirements are not met
for a plenary indulgence, then a partial indulgence can be
gained.
How to gain indulgences to free souls from
purgatory:
During the Jubilee
Year, which ends on January 6, 2026, a plenary indulgence can be
gained by going through a designated Jubilee Door in one’s own
diocese.
Participate in a
church’s Stations of the Cross, which needs to be 14 Stations,
representing the 14 Stations of Jerusalem. If you are praying the
Stations of the Cross alone in a church, then progression from one station to the next is
required.
Devout recitation
of five decades of the Holy Rosary in a church or oratory, or in a
family, a religious community, or when several of the faithful are
gathered.
Visit the Blessed
Sacrament for adoration, lasting at least for 30 minutes.
An indulgence can only be applied
to yourself or to someone who is deceased.
Make an effort to give “prayerful
alms” to the Blessed Mother for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, as they
can no longer pray for themselves. Remember that we can never forget
those who have gone before us and how much they appreciate every
prayer said on their behalf. Ask for their prayers. Then, watch how
generous they will be in their prayers for your needs.
May our indulgences and prayers
benefit the souls who are longing for heaven.
Yours in the Sacred Heart of Jesus
and the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
