John, Last night, Donald Trump spread more harmful lies during his joint address to Congress.
I wasn’t in attendance. Instead, I joined Senators Chris Murphy, Brian Schatz, and Ed Markey — along with other elected leaders, political commentators, and MoveOn, an organization focused on mobilizing for political progress — to provide live fact-checking for each of Trump’s lies.
So many Americans are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and concerned about making ends meet and the survival of our democracy itself. My colleagues and I used last night’s address to ground Trump’s rambling speech in reality, and get clear on how we got here and where we’re going.
Before this second Trump presidency, we were already facing an epidemic of loneliness and disconnection. This laid the groundwork for the MAGA movement’s rage-centered ideology to take hold.
The antidote to this is doing everything we can to reconnect. That means sparking conversations with our neighbors and working with organizations on the ground doing good work to strengthen our communities.
This kind of collaboration and civic engagement is alive and well in Vermont, where yesterday we celebrated Town Meeting Day, a day where every town meets and the community votes on the town's business. A true form of direct democracy.
To say things are hard right now would be an understatement. But we can’t back down at such a critical crossroads in our history. We have to care for ourselves and stay in connection with others to ensure we can show up to fight another day tomorrow. Because we are the changemakers. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
John, my last piece of advice to you is this: Do what you can, when you can. You can’t do it all.
Change takes time. Stay in this fight, and I promise you we will see progress — no matter what that little voice in the back of your head might say.
In Solidarity,
Becca
