Dear John,
Yesterday, President Trump enacted 10% tariffs on Canadian energy imports, which will dramatically increase costs for Maine families. This is not an isolated incident. President Trump’s actions yesterday were just his way of diving headfirst into an energy system that has always been deeply unfair for customers, putting corporate interests over the needs of everyday people.
In 2023, CMP and Versant disconnected customers 32,000 times and sent out 440,000 notices to customers behind on bills — all while making over $200 million in profit . That was after five years in which Maine had the fastest rising household electricity costs in the nation, largely due to our reliance on natural gas. So, fossil fuel megacorporations were raking in billions of dollars, too, as we dealt with the fallout.
Our energy system — designed from the start by utility executives and Big Oil — wasn’t set up for the people who use electricity… it was set up for the people who make money off of it . That is why Maine lawmakers must pass the Energy Fairness Act [[link removed]] .
The Energy Fairness Act [[link removed]] takes big swings at powerful corporations by protecting vulnerable customers from cruel disconnections, saving money by strengthening accountability policies, and paving the way to bring more clean electricity onto the system . The only way you, me, and our neighbors will have enough power to win both a cleaner system and a more compassionate system is by working together. As a first step, will you join the campaign by signing the petition [[link removed]] in support of this bill to show Governor Mills and state legislators that we’re serious about making change?

Often, at MCV, we talk about the importance of moving to 100% clean electricity. In the long term, that is the only way we will have a safe and affordable energy system. But in the short term, as President Trump raises prices, Big Oil profits, and utility executives skim off the top, we must also do more to protect people right now.
Maybe it’s you who is struggling, or your parents, or your kids. More than 156,000 people in Maine have unaffordable electric bills. Maybe it’s your neighbor down the road. 18% of Versant and CMP customers have past due balances each month. As President Trump’s tariffs come down and Mainers brace for impact, the issue could not be more pressing.
📢 I’m ready to tell Maine lawmakers I support Energy Fairness for Maine families! [[link removed]]
Thank you for your commitment to a fair and sustainable energy future,
Lucy
